Weeping for Her Children

December 15, 2012 / Kiersti Giron / children, prayer, scripture, trust

“Then when Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: ‘A voice was heard in Ramah,
 weeping and great mourning,
Rachel weeping for her children;
and she refused to be comforted,
because they were no more.’” ~ Matthew 2:18

I had meant to do a fun, happy post today, about Christmas decorations and mementos from friends decking our tree. But that doesn’t seem right anymore—not with the heartbroken families in Connecticut weeping for their children, facing a holiday that must seem it will be forever shadowed for them.
And I weep too, and pray, and wonder how and why this can be. And the only comfort I find comes from Christmas itself—or rather, the Christ in it. For it was into the darkness that the Light came. That Jesus came.
And our only hope is found in Him, our grief-bearer.

Surely our griefs He Himself bore,
and our sorrows He carried;
yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken,
smitten of God, and afflicted. But He was pierced through for our transgressions,
He was crushed for our iniquities;
the chastening for our well-being fell upon Him,
and by His scourging we are healed. ~Isaiah 53:4-5

That is what that Baby in the manger came for.

…every boot of the booted warrior in the battle tumult,
and cloak rolled in blood, will be for burning, fuel for the fire. For a child will be born to us… Isaiah 9:5-6

And someday…

…the leopard will lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little boy will lead them. Also the cow and the bear will graze,
their young will lie down together,
and the lion will eat straw like the ox.

The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra,
and the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, for the earth will be full of the knowledge of the Lord
 as the waters cover the sea. ~Isaiah 11:6-9

Lord Jesus, please be Immanuel with those families today.
